UNMANNED AIRCRAFT SYSTEM TO OPTIMISE GEOPHYSICAL DATA COLLECTION

Mobile Geophysical Technologies collects, processes and interprets magnetic data sets related to the Earth's surface and the soils and rocks beneath. MGT is a high-technology group backed by strong R&D teams in Germany and Switzerland and experienced professionals.
Our services include survey planning, permitting and shipping of equipment worldwide. Typical applications are:

  • Mapping geological structure and lithology
  • Mapping of old mine sites
  • Mapping of industrial contaminants
  • Mapping of unexploded ordnances (UXO)
  • Mineral exploration
  • Engineering projects
  • Archeology

As a novelty in geophysics MGT employs an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) that provides a rapid and cost-effective geophysical measuring platform. Our magnetic sensors The UAS is capable of fully autonomous flight, which operates in the way point route plan mode. In this mode the helicopter flies a pre-programmed series of way points (coordinates, heading, altitude, speed).

Results of aero geomagnetic field measurements employing an unmanned helicopter system were obtained from a joint scientific project between MGT and the Geophysical Institute of University of Cologne. This study was funded by the "Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft" under contract No TE170/12-1.

In order to provide real-time tracking of orientation or attitude of our sensor system we utilise an INS sensor system, that provide independent orientation from the Earth’s magnetic field as a reference.

ADVANTAGES OF UNMANNED HELICOPTERS

  • Enables spatial geophysical surveys on dense measurement grids
  • Allows operation at extremely low altitudes above ground (ca 1 m)
  • capable of safely operating in hazardous environments such as offshore or high mountains
  • Ideal platform for mid-sized surveys (0.1km2 to 10km2)
  • Quick data collection even in rough or rugged areas
  • Enables autonomous flight that reduces field labour and number of field personnel
  • Extreme flexible deployment in any region worldwide
  • Much faster than ground or vehicle based geophysical measurements
  • Ideal for small object detection buried in the soil or inshore waters
